The meaning of the names of the oldest places has been lost over time, but people's curiosity about their common past or wanting a connection to a place has not faded.
Many existing names (toponyms) are linked to a reason d'être whether they are names of rivers (hydronyms), lakes (limnons), seas and oceans (thassonyms) or names of hills, valleys or plains (ononyms).
In establishing or assigning a collective identity of a place, or singular to a couple, or dwelling, toponymics assumes particular importance in preserving the memory and cultural identity of the population, allowing the perpetuation of names, facts, places, and events by let us know the history of the places and their people.
