Carnival the festival of Western Christianity that precedes Lent, was experienced and felt by all as an important time, used to eat and drink in excess preparing in this way for the forty days of Lenten fasting.

Over time it has undergone changes and adapting to different times, the most common and which still persists in some processions, the loss of its individuality everyday life and experience a high sense of social unity

From the 16th century onwards, as a result of the reactions to religious conflicts that affected Europe, there were several initiatives to impose control over carnival festivities and Social control in the continent.

The modern Carnival, made up of parades and costumes, is a product of 20th century Victorian society, having been imported from Paris.

In the middle of the 21st century, in Portugal, a copy of the samba schools in Brazil is brought to the streets and Carnival losing its identity. There is an increase in the number of voices that express themselves as not liking the festivities, as a way to counter the trend,  there is a growing local need to keep the tradition alive and so it appears that the processions grow in number but the revelers decrease, they are less than the participants. It can almost be said that revelers are restricted to children attached to their school activities.

How long will it be possible to keep the festival and the current molds?

Carnaval - The original Latin word, carnis levale, meaning "to remove the meat"
